The Maldives is what dreams are made of!
No, the place is not overrated. Once you get to experience the heavenly beauty of the Maldives, you will never get over it. Plus if you can afford to pay for the one of the many great resorts the Maldives offer, the experience will be truly unforgettable.
Since our first time in the Maldives, many things have changed in our lives. We got married, have become parents, and our lifestyle has changed. The Maldives is the number-one destination for newlyweds, so you would think its only fun enough for a romantic holiday. You would be surprised that many resorts in the Maldives are family-oriented and have all the services to accommodate new parents or big families.
The perfect place for a family getaway
The trick is to choose the right place and do the research before making a booking. On our second trip to the Maldives, we made plans for my hubby’s birthday. We thought it would be quite romantic to visit the islands where it all started for us and celebrate his birthday. This time, the travel preparation included baby duties as we were travelling with our one-year-old son.
To get from New Zealand to the Maldives is a big mission, but even that didn’t stop us. At that stage, we had already travelled with our son quite a bit, so the thought of 30 hours of travel was overwhelming but wasn’t unrealistic. We really couldn’t wait to get there! We had chosen a fantastic resort that provided the babysitting services. All we had to do was to get there safely and get lost in our all-inclusive delicious cocktails and the warm breeze of the Indian Ocean.
Finolhu Baa Toll Maldives is a sister resort of Amilla Fushi where we spent our first Maldivian holiday. We happened to find this out by coincidence when we arrived at the island. To our surprise, these two resorts don’t have much in common. Amilla Fushi was more private and luxurious, which was perfect for a romantic getaway. Finolhu was very family oriented. It was loud, colourful, and packed with families with kids. Vibes of two resorts were entirely different. What was common was fantastic service and incredible nature.
Pool villa’s are no longer an option when you have a baby
As we were travelling with our son, we made the decision not to have a private pool, so we requested to stay in one of the Beach Villas. We were glad we had thought about it from the start as being far from the pools meant that we didn’t have to worry about our son jumping in the water without our supervision.
Even though the Beach Villa doesn’t come with a pool, you are only meters away from the ocean. Also, when you are new parents, you really feel like socialising and enjoy using a big bar pool with everyone else while kids are at the kindergarten.
The atmosphere at the main pool was always festive and very relaxing. The bar offered a big list of delicious cocktails and yummy food. Thanks to the fantastic services at the kindergarten, we felt like we were on an actual child-free holiday!
Kid’s club = quality time for mum and dad
The Oceaneer’s Kids Club was open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. At that stage, our son wasn’t familiar with anything like that, but girls at the kids club made his time very enjoyable. He was the youngest child at their club, and they made sure to give him extra care. By the end of the day, our darling son didn’t want to leave the club. That’s how we knew he did enjoy his time there. On the nights when we felt like spending some extra time at the bar, we requested a nanny to come to our villa to babysit at additional cost. I think we paid 30 USD per hour, but does it matter? When you only have a limited time to enjoy the fantastic surroundings and the services of the resort, extra cost for babysitting is a necessity!
Celebrated the birthday in style
On the night of my hubby’s birthday, I requested a romantic dinner set up for two of us as a surprise at the beach. The experience was extraordinary and very entertaining as well. The staff of the hotel sang the birthday song for him and prepared a cake with candles. Every night after a delicious buffet, all the guests could enjoy live music at the main bar. Two European-looking girls could really put on the show. Listening to their band was a very pleasant experience. Different shows would alternate every night. The fire show was one of our favourites. Every day at the resort was full of events and things to do. Yes, you guessed right…we didn’t want to leave!
On the days when our son was at the kids club, my hubby and I could really enjoy all the water activities the resort had to offer. This time during our stay at the resort, we wanted to be active and try some new things. Before the baby, I was taking my freedom for granted, and all I wanted to do was to be lazy and lay on the beach with a cocktail in my hand. Once you become a parent, it’s incredible how quickly your approach to the holiday changes! =)
To make our holiday even more memorable than it already was, we booked a professional photo shoot at the beach. This service wasn’t that cheap, as you only get five retouched photos uploaded on a USB disc. For us, it was the only way to capture all three of us together; so we justified that these precious memories were worth the cost. The photoshoot was right at the beach during a stunning Maldivian sunset. The local photographer knew the area very well and chose the best timing, so the experience was stress-free. I think getting those photos done was the best decision; no doubt, they have become my favourite!
My Spa Experience at The Cove Club
In keeping with our tradition of enjoying couple’s spa treatments, we booked a treatment at the resort’s spa, The Cove Club. The place was neatly styled featuring iconic divas of the 60’s and 70’s. The Cove Club offered a wide variety of rejuvenating and reviving treatments. We chose a chakras balancing massage using only organic products. It started with a body scrub, then point pressure massage followed by a back massage with hot stones. I have had this treatment before many times. It’s very relaxing and even more beneficial. Its all about the right pressure and good energy flow. When this treatment is performed correctly, it should give you deep relaxation and relief from life’s busy thoughts.
The best part of the treatment was Shirodhara. A steady flow of warm oil onto the forehead stimulates the pituitary gland, or “third-eye.” It is meant to improve your mental clarity and comprehension. Also reduces and relieves migraine headaches and decreases hair loss and fatigue. I would recommend not to rush and wash the oil off for some time to let it nourish your hair and a scalp.
After the treatment, we had a nice cup of tea at the spa pool with spectacular views of the beautiful Maldivian horizon. The combination of all these things was fantastic and left us with perfect memories that will last forever!
